What is cold brew?

Cold brew is coffee grounds steeped in cold water for an extended period (typically 12-24 hours) to extract flavor without heat, resulting in a smooth concentrate that differs from iced coffee made by cooling hot-brewed coffee.

Cold brew uses time instead of heat to pull flavors from coarsely ground coffee. The grounds sit submerged in cold water for 12 to 24 hours, slowly releasing oils, sugars, and compounds that create a concentrate. This concentrate is then diluted with water or milk to drink, or served straight over ice.

The key difference from iced coffee is the brewing method. Iced coffee starts with hot-brewed coffee that is then chilled, which can taste bitter or thin as the water cools. Cold brew, by contrast, never reaches high temperatures. The slow steeping produces a naturally sweeter, smoother cup with lower acidity and a thicker body. The concentrate format also gives cafes flexibility: they can prepare large batches and store them for several days, making cold brew efficient for high-volume service.

Cold brew has become a staple in specialty coffee culture across Kuala Lumpur. Many cafes list it as a signature offering during warm months or year-round, serving it black, with milk, or as the base for flavored drinks. The method suits different coffee origins and roast levels, so taste varies by cafe. If you want to explore cold brew options, check out local specialty coffee providers.
