What is espresso?

A concentrated coffee drink produced by forcing hot water through tightly packed, finely ground coffee at high pressure, resulting in a small, strong shot topped with crema.

Espresso is a coffee concentrate made by pushing pressurised hot water through a tightly packed puck of finely ground coffee. A single shot typically runs 25-30ml and takes 25-30 seconds to extract. The pressure, usually between 9-10 bars, forces water rapidly through the grounds, extracting oils, dissolved solids, and flavour compounds in a fraction of the time it takes to brew filter coffee.

The hallmark of well-pulled espresso is crema: the golden-brown foam layer on top formed by emulsified oils and carbon dioxide. Crema indicates proper extraction and adds texture and bitterness to the cup. Without it, the shot is usually under-extracted or pulled from stale beans.

Espresso serves as the foundation for most cafe drinks. A single shot becomes a cortado or macchiato when milk is added. Double shots form the base of flat whites, cappuccinos, and lattes. Many Kuala Lumpur cafes use espresso-based drinks as their core menu, varying milk ratios and technique to create distinct profiles.

Consistency matters. The grind size, dose of coffee, tamping pressure, and machine calibration all affect extraction. Cafes investing in quality grinders and machines produce brighter, cleaner shots than those using inconsistent equipment. For specialty coffee venues, espresso quality directly reflects their skill and equipment standards.
