What is matcha?

Matcha is a powdered form of shade-grown green tea that is whisked with hot water to create a frothy beverage, originating from Japan.

Matcha comes from tea plants grown under shade for several weeks before harvest, which increases chlorophyll and amino acid levels in the leaves. After picking, the leaves are dried and ground into an extremely fine powder that dissolves into liquid, unlike steeped tea leaves that must be strained out.

In preparation, a small amount of matcha powder is placed in a bowl and whisked with hot water using a specialized bamboo whisk called a chasen. The whisking action aerates the powder and creates the characteristic frothy, bright green drink. The result is a smooth beverage where the entire leaf is consumed, not just brewed water, giving matcha a more concentrated flavor and nutrient profile than regular steeped green tea.

Matcha has become popular in cafes across Kuala Lumpur, appearing in both traditional whisked form and as an ingredient in lattes, smoothies, and desserts. The powder's vibrant color and earthy, slightly bitter taste make it recognizable to customers seeking something beyond standard coffee or tea. Tea houses and cafes in the city now commonly stock matcha as a signature offering, particularly among venues focused on specialty tea service.
