What is teh tarik?

Teh tarik is a Malaysian beverage of strong black tea mixed with condensed milk, characterised by a theatrical pouring technique that aerates the drink and produces a distinctive frothy layer.

Teh tarik literally means "pulled tea" in Malay, referring to the signature pouring method rather than the ingredients alone. The drink itself is a blend of strongly brewed black tea (typically Assam) and sweetened condensed milk, poured between two metal cups or mugs held at arm's length apart. This height differential creates aeration and cools the tea to serving temperature while mixing the components thoroughly.

The pouring ritual is central to what makes teh tarik distinct. A skilled operator will pull the stream of tea back and forth, building a layer of foam on top as air is incorporated. This foam (called "buih") sits above the creamy base and is prized for its texture and the visual spectacle of the pour itself. The technique requires practice and is often performed with flair in front of customers.

Teh tarik originated in the mamak stalls and Indian Muslim-run coffee shops of Malaysia and has become a fixture across the country. You will find it at tea houses and casual cafes throughout Kuala Lumpur, where it serves as a morning or afternoon staple. The drink is typically served hot, though iced variations exist. Its popularity stems partly from affordability and partly from the engaging performance element that comes with each pour.
